forbidden loveLOCATION: my car , WisconsinYEAR: 2004TAGS: Nabokov, adolescense, Lolita, forbidden lovePUBLISHED: May 20, 2008my teen years being a little on the lame-ish side, I was once driving my grandma home from the grocery store when this song came on the radio. When a song has been around longer than you have, you tend to know all the words without listening, let alone understanding the meaning. Well, for some reason, I decided to truly pay attention and I was pleasantly shocked - "Grandma!" I exclaimed; you may giggle at me. "Do you know what this song is about? An older guy and a younger girl!" Having a predilection for older male authority figures myself, I heartily approved of the song and became an official fan of The Police. When we arrived home I pulled out our old 1978 World Book Encyclopedias (God, I adore those things [even tho I am pretty sure we had the internet at that time, I was dedicated to old school research]) and looked up Nabokov. Once my eyes landed on the word Lolita, I instantly recognized it as "that book" from the song and knew I must read it. I still remember what my librarian said in response to me asking if we had any Nabokov (in a public school!) on the shelves. "Why do you want to read that?" she knew exactly what I was talking about ... perhaps because my adoration for several of my teachers was thinly veiled? In any case I am forever in debt to Sting for introducing me to my favorite novel and for providing me with a tune that can take me back to my school girl days
