If my life were a musical...LOCATION: high school, Hot SpringsYEAR: 2006TAGS: friends, lunch lady, Gone with the Wind, musicalsPUBLISHED: February 11, 2008I had this moment once where I began to wonder if life is more than a bit surreal, and I’m not talking about a collection of art. Sometimes the craziest things happen and you just have to sit back and laugh at how unpredictable life really is. So I was stuck at school my senior year because my best friend begged me to stay. They weren’t taking roll and the juniors were testing, so the seniors were going to be stuffed, like sardines, into the auditorium. We ended up watching Gone With the Wind. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a good Clark Gable movie as much as the next girl, but I was really not in the mood for this movie. I hadn’t had enough sleep to convince myself to stay awake, and I knew that we didn’t actually have enough time to finish the stupid movie anyway. Basically it was hours of me playing with the Batman flashlight on my key chain. But after the movie we went into the cafeteria. We wanted to stay in the theater, my friends and I, since we were Thespians (drama geeks to the 3rd power) and it was allowed. Plus, we just got stuff out of the vending machine to eat half of the time anyway, but we allowed ourselves to be led like cattle down the hallways towards the dull cafeteria. We sat next to the salad line and refused to eat anything, but we all drank iced tea. For once in our lives, we couldn’t think of a single thing to talk about. At the end of the table sat a boy named Matt and I; we were the hermits of the group, not very talkative, semi-intelligent, read too many books, etc. We were all sitting there, staring at the wall, and trying to come up with a band that we all liked; well, we found it—Queen. We sat there naming off random songs that we liked by this classic rock band, with the lunch lady from the salad bar joining in her favorites as well. Matt and I discovered that we were the true fans, and every one else just liked Bohemian Rhapsody. For some reason, this inspired us to sing it. Nope, seriously, complete with jumping up on the table, high pitched voices, head-banging at the appropriate times, and pausing for the instrumental parts (which were sang, of course). More and more of the seniors began to stand with us and join in with the song. There were so many people singing near the end that I couldn't hear myself think. Even the lunch lady sang along with us, for most of it, but finally, as the juniors began to trickle in, we had to stop singing on top of the table, so we continued, sitting down, with The Little Mermaid. I couldn’t help thinking that things like this didn’t happen in real life. In fact, I doubt anyone ever believes me, but it was a moment from one of those musicals that I love, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Thanks Queen!
