Better than ChocolateLOCATION: Home , Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, United StatesYEAR: 2008TAGS: chocolate, transgenderism, lesbians, girl, marriage, censorshipPUBLISHED: February 29, 2008(1) I'm a fan of the TV crime drama/horror show Blood Ties and of most any type of movie or TV genre especially action, sci-fi, and horror genres. (2) I'm not what you might call a "chick flick" kind of gal. In fact, although I enjoyed and like such movies as The Devil Wears Prada and Pretty Woman, I prefer movies with a bit more grit or fantasy elements - movies like Chronicles of Riddick, SAW, or Serenity. As for the "chick flicks" I like, they have to be fairly well written for me to admit to that fact later. What, you're probably asking, does that have to do with anything; especially chocolate or the song 'Ice Cream'? Well, this memory is about the movie Better than Chocolate in which Christina Cox, of Chronicles of Riddick and Blood Ties fame, is a wandering artist who has fallen in love with this girl, a college drop-out trying to find herself in the world. Let me note at this point the movie isn't entirely "chick flick-ish," but mostly comedy/drama/art oriented. That said - the movie is one of those late 90s "feel good" comedy flicks that uses certain "hot" themes(in this case sexuality, marriage, transgenderism, censorship, and art) to focus on how isolated people can be in the world, how truly afraid people are of new experiences, and how people shouldn't fear new experience as they are often some of the most positive moments in our lives. I sat down and watched this movie in one of my rare "feel good" type moods in which I felt that even if the dialogue turned out to be hack and the plot trite, I'd still be willing to waste two hours to watch it on LOGO. So, you can guess what I'm about to say: The dialogue was better than I imagined it would be and the plot, although still heavily re-hashed in some areas, was entirely fresh and interesting in others. I actually enjoyed this movie and the movie's main song, 'Ice Cream' as it matched perfectly the above-mentioned themes. AND, the sometimes sappy, happy-ending part of my personality had one of those "ahhh...wasn't that soooo cute" moments at the end of the movie when all of the "issue" areas were tied up neatly in a bow while the two main characters kissed to the refrain of Sarah McLachlan's 'Ice Cream' playing in the background. With lyrics like: "Your love is better than ice cream and "Your love is better than chocolate I melted completely and now can't stop humming this song when I'm in a good mood. Â
