Jbev | MEMORY FROM 1989

An Unreasonable Facsimile Of The Righteous Brothers

LOCATION: Boardwalk , Ocean City, NJ

YEAR: 1989

TAGS: Righteous Broters, Senior Week, Duet, Ocean City

PUBLISHED: March 12, 2008

Yes, even back in the dark ages when I was in high school, kids went to Senior Week. I don't remember too much about it, simply because so much time has passed. I remember a really crappy hotel room with far too many kids crammed into it, everyone fighting for space on the beds. I remember getting sunburned after falling asleep on the beach. And I remember my buddy Louie pouring Worcestershire Sauce on my head in response for playing a prank on him. That smell was atrocious, and I couldn't get rid of it for the entire week. Good times.

Probably my fondest memory comes from a night when my buddy Nippon and I, a little weary of all the debauchery back at the hotel, took a walk on the boardwalk. We found one of those homemade recording booths that let you record your voice on top of a popular song for twenty bucks or so. Nippon and I both considered ourselves outstanding singers, and couldn't pass this up.

We chose "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" because it was the only song we could think of with two guys duetting. I took the low Bill Medley parts, Nippon took the high Bobby Hatfield parts. Ah, let me tell you, it was a stirring performance. It got great reviews from all of our friends. Mind you, most of them were tanked at the time, but still.

Of course, being the idiots that we were, we lost the tape not long after. Someday, it may be discovered, like a time capsule, and another culture will knowthe method thatlate 20th century teenagers used to make asses of themselves.

I'm telling you, someone probably found that tape, and it's probably the number 1 song in Borneo or something like that and I'm getting screwed out of the profits. (3/13/2008)
