Jane Jane | MEMORY FROM 1998

Who plays that at a wedding?

LOCATION: Wedding Reception , Weed

YEAR: 1998

My father's side of the family is certifiably crazy but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'd bet my left tit that if you hung out with them especially my cousins, you would have a great time and laugh until you pissed your pants.

Luckily, we spent a lot of time with them during our summer breaks which I always enjoyed. They lived about three hours east of us in a smaller town than ours. But, we were never bored and always seemed to find our own fun and trouble.

The oldest of the three boys, Kevin, was consumed with Kiss when we were kids. And, if you walked into his house today, I'd guarantee he probably has Kiss memorabilia all over the place still. It wasn't too uncommon to find us all in my aunt's shed rocking out and trying to be Kiss. My little sister, Tara, always got stuck being Gene Simmons because she had the longest tongue, and I would play the part of Ace Frehley with Kevin and his brother, Casey, filling in the rest of the band. Good times! Kevin introduced me to the world of rock, and I love him for that.

So, when I heard that Kevin and his brothers were coming to Tara's wedding, I was ecstatic but a little nervous for the other guests. Even though we are all grown up, their insanity is perpetual, and I figured something interesting would transpire at the reception.

After a couple hours of dancing, Kevin approached me and started talking about old times. As we were reliving our childhood antics, I could see his brother walk up to the DJ. Considering the boys never listened to anything but rock music, I was curious as to what the hell he was requesting -- maybe the customary AC/DC that you hear at dances is what he requested.

A few songs later, the DJ asked that my little sister come to the stage. By this point, I was completely baffled and honestly, a bit scared. The look of confusion was all over my sister's beautiful face as well. Kevin started laughing and throwing the rock signs in the air.

Then, the DJ said "This was requested just for you." The speakers started to blare Strutter by Kiss. The oh shit glaze in my sisters eyes instantly made me giggle uncontrollably. That was until my cousins pulled me on the dance floor next to my sister and began rocking out like when we were children. At that point, I could feel the color in my face turn to match the redness of Tara's. What the hell! I looked at my sister and said, "Come on, Gene. Let's do this."

Needless to say, the guests all got a kick out of us reliving those days in my aunt's shed even though we looked completely ridiculous. And, for a brief moment while ignoring the laughter, we were just that-- kids again pretending to be the boys in Kiss.

A couple of years ago, I bought Guitar Hero II and to my surprise, Strutter was one of the games songs. I couldn't wait to call my sister and tell her. When she answered the phone, I said, "Come on over, Gene. Lets do this."

Her response, "Oh shit. Should I bring my wedding dress this time?"

eh, it's better than what a friend of mine did. their first dance as a married couple? "Lips of an Angel." Which is, what, definitely a song about cheating? or at lest, wanting to cheat? for full details, the memory is "You Want To Do What?" (4/10/2008)
