hurricanesteve | MEMORY FROM 1987

My first CD

1987.  We got a CD player.  A Sharp model that probably cost a fortune.  Dad's golden ear didn't like the AAD conversions of Strauss and Vivaldi and especially Holst's Planets.  Not at all, sounded tinny and discrete to him.  But not to me.  No needle scratch.  Direct track access.  It sounded like the future.  Full of possibility and power.

What did my adolescent brain choose for my first CD?  The original AAD conversion of Bad Company's 10 from 6.  Why?  For Run With the Pack.   Paul Rodgers voice is what I wanted to sound like.  The songs told stories.  Good stories.  Rodgers made you believe them.  I went back and bought the Run With the Pack CD years later, as it is probably their best (Silver Blue and Gold is probably my favorite song of all time).  Blues-rock still does it for me in all its incarnations because of these discs.

David said: Great to see an annotation such as AAD again. I remember actually picking up a Midnight Oil album in the late 80's because of a DDD mark on it... and it sounded good, but now I suppose it sounds brittle. I also remember an album with an AAA (!) mark on it as a joke. (3/20/2008)

I doubt even today i can tell an AAD from a DDD disc. That '87 vintage DAC in that Sharp unit was probably what caused the most trouble. thx for the comment! (3/20/2008)
