Unchained MelodyLOCATION: Party , New OrleansYEAR: 1965TAGS: Carnival, King Cake parties, New OrleansPUBLISHED: May 1, 2008The song “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers will always bring me back to memories when I was in the sixth grade at a King Cake Party in New Orleans. The parties were all the rage during Carnival season, but when you’re in the sixth grade and just becoming interested in boys—everything seems important. This boy I liked was at the party and I was a nervous wreck. The girl who was hosting the party had planned to play Spin the Bottle before the party was over and all the girls were crazy with excitement. Then, the song “Unchained Melody” began to play over the phonograph. And the boy, Ricky, I had a crush on walked over to me and asked me to dance. My legs felt as if there were made of wood and I’m still not even sure I answered him. I do know I danced with Ricky and remember how weird it felt for a boy to have his arms wrapped around me. My heart raced the entire way through the dance. No doubt I stepped on his feet the whole way through, but at the end of the song Ricky leaned over and kissed me. I was in shock, but happy shock. Now who needed Spin the Bottle? My girlfriends who saw it were speechless. It was not only the first time I danced with a boy, but also the first tongue kiss I got from a boy all wrapped up in one. What an extraordinary night. That night before I went to sleep I remembered being convinced that Ricky and I would no doubt get married and live happily ever after. God, am I glad that didn’t happen.
