Rock Around the ClockLOCATION: Party , New OrleansYEAR: 1959TAGS: Dick Clark, rock and roll, 50’s, poodle skirtsPUBLISHED: May 1, 2008The song “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley and the Comets will always hold significant meaning for me. My sister is ten years older than me and in the year 1959 she was a teenager. This was the era of greasers, poodle skirts, the beginning of rock and roll music, payola and Dick Clark. My sister, Peggy, would have huge parties (sock hops) in our double car garage every Saturday night with all her friends. Naturally, she didn’t want me anywhere around but little did she know I would sneak out and peek through the window while the party was usually in full swing. There was no way I was missing a good time, too. I learned so much from her and her friends, but mostly it was all about the dancing and the music. Bill Haley’s song of “Rock Around the Clock” seemed to get all the teenagers of that era going and dancing. The teenagers of the 50’s breathed for the music and dancing. Standing outside in my pajamas, I would watch them through the window dancing in our garage doing the Jitterbug and other popular dances. I know to this day this is why I love music so much because I would copy everything my big sister would do. Luckily for me, I never got caught snooping on them.
