Jamaica Say You Will

LOCATION: Camp , Battles Wharf

YEAR: 1970

TAGS: camp

PUBLISHED: May 1, 2008

I was sixteen years old at the time and a counselor at Camp Cullen in Battles Wharf, Alabama for the summer. As counselors there were two to a cabin and ten children supervised by each one. My new friend, Julie, who would end up being my best friend shared the counselor’s cabin with me and had brought a small cassette tape player with her to camp. Every night we would sit in the counselor’s room with the kids laughing and just having fun. A lot of the kids would talk with us about subjects like sex and drugs because we were closer in age with them than their parents. We knew they felt safe and trusted us. Almost every night after dinner, we’d light incense, play our guitars and sing songs, but in between we’d play Jackson Browne’s song “Jamaica Say You Will” endlessly on the cassette player. In fact, we played the song so much that all the kids knew all the words to the song. I think the kids were sick and tired of hearing the song because after awhile anything we’d ask them, they’d answer with words to the song.  But it was a great time in my life and a great memory to remember. Although I can’t possibly listen to a Jackson Brown CD without memories of days at Camp Cullen coming up, in particular “Jamaica Say You Will” was indeed the most important song that summer.
