It started as a joke...LOCATION: Japan/Hippodrome , Kyoto/GainesvilleYEAR: 2008TAGS: Arashi, music video, Hippodrome, JapanPUBLISHED: May 1, 2008I recently went on a 2 week trip to Japan which, by the way, was amazing. One night, back at the hotel we were staying at, my roommate and I turned on the TV while we were getting ready, and some crazy Japanese game show was on. There was a team of 5 boys competing to win...something (our Japanese was pretty much nonexistent). We somehow got really into the show and ended up watching for an hour or so. By the end, I had my favorite team member picked out (who in my mind completely carried the team). The next day we were talking about it and another girl on our trip overheard and informed us that it was not just 5 random guys, oh no, it was none other than the Japanese boy band Arashi, who currently had the number one single in Japan. We thought that this was hilarious, and it kind of became the joke of the trip- that we were Arashi super fans and wanted to find Arashi t-shirts/posters/mugs/keychains before we left, etc. Clearly I bought the single before returning home, along with an Arashi piggy bank (get jealous). When I got back I told everyone about my trip and Arashi inevitably came up. During breaks at work we watched the videos on YouTube, drove around town blasting J-Pop, pretended to know the words to the songs...yes, we were awesome. It also turned out that one of my co-workers had to make a music video for the film club she was involved in, and thought an Arashi song would actually be perfect, since it would be so obscure and not in english. Obviously we all volunteered to help (as well as recruiting a random stranger to be a band member for the video). We spent one Saturday afternoon at the theatre that we work at and made it happen- it was one of the most fun days ever. I think it was also one of the most random as well- "What did you do today?" "Oh ya know, just made a Japanese boy band music video..." So there it is- I saw some guys on a Japanese game show who became the inside joke of our trip and a month later we've shot a music video to their song- who knew? If anyone wants to see it's up on youtube: http://youtube.com/oh yeaharashi That is all.
