Gilsouth | MEMORY FROM 2003

Finally doing a good cover version of this song

LOCATION: A wierd gay bar in Cape Town, forget the name. Remember the experience. , Cape Town, South Africa

YEAR: 2003

TAGS: the police, memory

PUBLISHED: April 26, 2008

I play in a band , and have always loved and played instruments. Not too sure how the Police came into my life but they definitely struck a chord with me. (not even going to bother with that one)

They were so cool to me because they were far better than most musicians I'd heard from my generation (90's) and their songs were simple but complex and clever at the same time.

Anyway with that in mind, the one song I truly loved was "message in a bottle". I loved it so much that I made everyone in my band learn the song to perform at our college party.i think the reason was because I admired the band so much that if we could pull off one of their songs......well... then that would mean we weren't too bad ourselves. I guess thats what the going idea was.

Ok let me just give you some background info on my band, I started it as a comedy one man show with one guy (me) playing guitar and singing songs that were lame but in the end kind of came together and caught most people off gaurd. I decided to name it....."Genitalia!" Ya ! I wrote a couple of songs and showed them to my friends all the time saying, " I'm in baaaaand!" that kind of humor. My friends were very impressed witht the whole act and convinced me to make it a complete band , drums, bass, guitar. The whole shabang! And with that ladies and gents "GENITALIA" was formed.

ok, back to the gig, at the weird gay club. (it' was weird cos everything was covered in black leather, and there was this one room that was completely dark and there was a maze in there as well. thatswhy it was WEIRD! I feel I need to explain this.) anyway we'd been booked for the party and as we and another band we're the only people wiling to do it for free, plus I knew everyone so that was cool. And we'd been practicing four weeks solid! Everyday just so we wouldn;t fuck up and look bad, and then with a name like "Genitalia" it would just be too obvious!

Then
i get the bright idea to cover " message in a bottle" with 5 days till D-Day. People bitched , people moaned but in the end, Steve the guitarist said,"look it will make us really good musicians to cover this song." And with that backing I got everyone else to comply.with 5 days to learn a new song especially a real bitch  like message in a bottle, you can understand that the end result was sketchy at best!

So the night comes and we're a little nervous, including me ! So I had 5 beers to calm me down. Anyway the show went on with out a hitch and blew everyone away! Especially as they all thought we'd suck! (genitalia ,worst name ever...etc) . So at the end of the gig I am partly compus, and decide to annouce,"ladies and Gentlemen, we're not done yet! Here's another charming number by the Police , HIT IT ! "

Ofcourse the band was terrified to play this and I saw the fear in the bassist eyes.Poor bastard! but it went perfectly and everyone loved it . Including dudes I had had arguments in college with. They came up to me and shook my hand. It was great, to take a chance in front of everyone and not fall!

Message in a bottle remains, as does The Police my favourite music of all time.

Anyway thats my fond memory hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!
