Synchronistic SwimmersShowLOCATION: high school indoor pool , Shaker Heights, OhioYEAR: 1980TAGS: water-ballet, sync_ron_icity, Tchaikovsky, positive, choreographyPUBLISHED: May 6, 2008Never is a powerful word-eternity is not promised so one should never make what you can't keep true or precious, set in stone. If you can live life as if a chain with links of each part of you being strongest when attached to another link, then you are not ill-shackled but satisfactorily resistant to change. The chain can hold you, bind you but never set you free, until you let go. The diving tournament was over, we won and gave our best divers a chance to show off for awhile before the water-ballet began. For the first ten minutes these eight ladies carefully choreographed an instrumental prologue to the show using excerpts from Tchaikovsky's Opus 12 Snow Maiden composed in 1873 and Opus 20 Swan Lake composed between 1875 and 1876. The classical was followed by a more contemporary ensemble including Scott Joplin's The Entertainer and the theme from Peter Gunn. As they girls began to show exceptional quality in choreography from a watery standpoint, tiresome legs and arms were beginning to materialize. It took the beating of the first few bars and this song to give the girls a kind-of 'collective energy'; somewhat like whata chain might have at each link, some additional stamina. The girls grabbed the appropriate leg and made their circle widen. They took in more balance as they swirled in unison to Stevie's ethereal voice. She has that way you know to just intoxicate you no matter what she is singing about, or at least she does with me. The show ended spectacularly with the entire audience standing up and chanting never break the chain and they didn't, we didn't and at this particular moment, my world was forever linked to good things and positive sync_ron_icities ! and here it is in full stereo version . . . The Chain I let go of my insecurities, my fears and feelings of inadequacy in certain areas of my teenage life. I broke some chains and adapted to new ones. But I never forgot what I was made of and how strongly I can break any chain I want no matter how strong the one at the other end thinks they are, holding me to something . . .
