Miss Orton, I presume?LOCATION: Hotel room, New York CityYEAR: 2000TAGS: Beth Orton, Jeff BuckleyPUBLISHED: January 4, 2008There was a time in my life when I couldn't get enough of Beth Orton, a wonderfully talented singer-songwriter who could do no wrong for me. She could have put out an album of simply her yawning and I would have bought it.
On a night in 2000, Jeff Buckley's lovely mother, Mary Guibert, invited me to listen to some unreleased live performances of Jeff. I jumped at the thought, stuck my Beth Orton CDs in my bag (I never liked them that far from me should I want to listen) and left work to head down to Mary's hotel room on 57th street. So I'm there hanging out, meeting a couple new friends, distracted... and Mary comes by with a man and women in tow... "David, I'd like you to meet Matt, Jeff's original drummer... and Beth". Beth Orton was standing in front of me... she and I said our hellos and I was there just a bit struck... turns out that Matt went on to play drums in her touring band... small world. Or just small if you connect all the dots of the people you know.
