Leaving New YorkLOCATION: Babbo, New York CityYEAR: 2004TAGS: Proposal, Relocating, REMPUBLISHED: December 7, 2007So this is one of those spooky tales... But about a month before Shannon and I were due to leave to NYC for Houston, I proposed to her, she luckily accepted, and we went off to celebrate that night at a restaurant we cherish called Babbo. Really exceptional place.
So a couple wonderous wine recommendations later, we're waiting for our table when I do one of those NYC "whoa" things with my face and my wife-to-be asks me what's up... I say "look!"... and she looks to see some random red-headed guy with a girl who looks 24 and could definitely be considered to be "Nikki with an I"... Anyway, it turns out to be Mike Mills, the bass player from REM... hardly someone most normal people would recognize, but I'm a freak. So eventually our two parties become closer in proximity and there's a barstool near us which I offer to his young companion. I then give one of my "I normally don't do this" speeches to him, but the cabernet has me saying "I just got engaged and I'm a big fan slur slur slur..." he was very gracious and interactive as we chatted for a couple minutes and he tells me that REM is finishing up their new album around the corner and we then go our separate ways. We eventually have a terrific meal... about a week later, it is revealed that REM's new single is called "Leaving New York", just as we are about to.
