Chopping It All DownLOCATION: Car, HoustonYEAR: 2007TAGS: U2PUBLISHED: December 7, 2007Today on my drive back to work after a random test for illicit substances, I heard "The Fly" on satellite radio. The song has always been one of my favorites... even through the less than audiophile quality of XM, you could hear just how layered the song with different sonic textures whizzing all around. And the lyrics read like slam poetry to me.
I remember the first time I ever heard the song. It was in conjunction with something called a "video premiere" on a channel called "MTV". Those were events. All the mice were lined up to witness something for the first time with no other real outlet to get the cheese. Now the mice scurry around the digital grid to find cheese... Anyway, having been a disciple of the Joshua Tree era U2 and totally fallen under their spell (through Rattle & Hum, even) I was very excited to hear Joshua Tree II... hearing "Bullet The Blue-Green Sky" with Bono shirtless in a slightly different leather vest. But instead I saw something which made me feel like the guy in the Memorex ad... my hair was totally blown back by the new sound and vision of the sacred band.
