The question, for me, when it comes to the Y.M.C.A., is not "What memory do you associate with the song?" It's "What memory DON'T you associate with the song?"

I cannot remember a single family get-together or school dance or day with friends when this song wasn't mentioned. I know all the words to this song, sadly, and I don't even like it. But what is it about the song that has made it so ridiculously popular? Is it the "gay" thing? Is it the terrible costumes associated with the Village People? Is it both of those things? Or something entirely different?

Okay, I'm rambling.

I suppose I'll take this time to talk about my tenth grade Homecoming Dance. Very boring, very bad dress, annoying shoes. I hated my hair, which was all curly like Shirley Temple, and none of my best friends showed up. But the thing that I really remember from it is that I was taking pictures the whole time of random people. I don't know where those pictures are right now, probably in storage a state away, but one pictures I took was of the entire gymnasium filled with teenagers with their arms stretched up to the sky as if praying for rain, but in fact, they are doing the Y.M.C.A.
