What is it good for?LOCATION: Home , Bristol, WI, USAYEAR: 1999TAGS: fight, teenager, father, anger, war, drinkingPUBLISHED: February 15, 2008I'm not sure exactly of the year that this memory took place, but since I was living in Bristol at the time it had to be the late 90's or in 2000. My brother was upstairs in his attic bedroom listening to music and playing his video games (probably Grind Session, which would explain his terrible mood). My dad came home from his friend's house completely drunk and in a bad mood as well. When he walked in the front door, he heart my brother's music playing pretty loudly, and since it was music he didn't like, he went upstairs to tell him to turn it down. The song that was playing was not Edwin Starr, but a remake of his song, "War." The song was done by a rap group that I can't think of the name of and there are simply too many songs with that title so I'll never be able to find it. If anyone knows, I'd like to hear from you! So my dad goes upstairs and starts telling him to turn it down, and my brother does, but my dad isn't done. He starts talking about what a terrible influence rap is and that he doesn't like that my brother listens to it. But my brother fights back about how this particular song isn't bad because it's opposing war. For once, I actually agreed with him, but I wasn't about to step into this (I was downstairs in my room, but I could hear them perfectly). This loud and angry conversation went on for a few minutes until my brother got extremely angry and ran out of the house into the surrounding woods. I don't know where he went, if anywhere, but he stayed gone for a few hours, and when he came back, he went back upstairs. No music. Just silence. And nobody has spoken of it since. But it's always in my mind when I hear either versions of this song.
