My Generation Is Doomed

There are a few songs which I associate with high school art class, since, at my school, people brought in CD's to listen to during class.

This day in Art II, someone had brought in a compilation CD of the latest rock hits. About halfway through, this song came on, and I recognized it, since, as I mentioned before, my dad was really into 70's classics. You can guess that a lot of people in the class, especially those who had never heard the song before were really not digging the tunes. One guy said it was the worst music he'd ever heard. Another person complained about the spiritual aspect of the song because she wasn't into anything affiliated with religion in any way.

My art teacher, who I just KNOW was a hippie way back in the day, just sat there singing along, and all I could think is "This generation is doomed!"

Oddly enough, I actually kinda like the song!

I grew up in the 70's, and I personally endured the vapid music of the 1980's, which now has sort of a romanticized chic-ness to it (at least, among those in my generation, who are now in their mid 30's). I really hate to say it (because I fear that I am starting to sound like my Dad), but today's popular music is mostly total unlistenable crap. The whole "emo" movement is so overdone that I want to scream every time I hear any of these new cookie-cutter bands on the local modern rock station. These jokers are as bad as the hair metal posers of the 80's... only the new breed like to act like they are all brooding and serious ("I'm soooo emotionally scarred..." WHATEVER). At least the idiots in the 80's were all about having fun. There are a few "mainstream" bands today that are worth listening to... I really like "Death Cab for Cutie," but most of the garbage that the major labels push is not even worth the effort to steal. OK - you can have the soapbox back... ;) (5/15/2008)

Though I think if I had to pick the generation of listeners that I think got the worst deal, it would be those who were high school/college age in the late nineties and 2000. Sometimes I just can't bear to listen to the music that I liked in middle school and late grade. As for the emo kids... HAHhaha. Yes, it's pretty ridiculous and out of hand, at least the trend is, but I have to say, I hung around with a few of them in school, and just like the metal heads of the 80's, not all of them are exactly alike. Complaining about their "depression" and everything. I mean... and the music thing... I like some emo music. I listen to MCR... So sue me, lol. :) Rock on for having a soap box rant, though. I admit to not really having anything like that to rant on. (5/15/2008)
