Physics vs Bartending: Round 1LOCATION: Berea College , KentuckyYEAR: 2007TAGS: bartending, college, drop-outPUBLISHED: February 18, 2008Â Only one song has ever made me voluntarily drop out of school to pursue a dream, and this is it. As a physics major, bartending wasn't in my career plans. Since I was little I'd wanted to go to bartending school, but my family, fearing a sort of bar-hopping drunk career on the horizon, insisted I get a "real job". Â Walking down the street of a nearby town, I passed a place that I'd only glanced at, my brain not quite registering what it was. As I stood in front of it and read the sign for the first time, I knew I had to work there. It was The Paddy Wagon. Â She was calling me, and she was most persuasive. She knew my hopes, my fears and my weaknesses. Initially I chalked it up to an overactive imagination and started to walk away. Suddenly, as a customer walked out, I caught the sounds of the most exquisite song ever to grace my ears. My inner Darcy came out, and she wanted to serve Guiness for a living. Â I ultimately decided to quit school and enroll in a different type of education: bartending. At first I was approved for a loan, enough to cover the cost of the course, but problems at school arose and I was unable to actually take out the loan. Once I got my affairs in order, I tried again for the loan but due to some conflicts was unable to get enough to pay for the course. Â Deciding to wing it, I dropped out of school officially, figuring on odd jobs to make up the difference. Two days before I was due to leave campus, Mom called with news that quite destroyed everything: The Paddy Wagon had caught fire and burned completely. Â It was a huge blow to me, but I didn't give up. I still plan on taking the courses, at some point. Darcy wouldn't let me give up that easily.Â
