A Bit ConfusedLOCATION: Berea College , KentuckyYEAR: 2006TAGS: college, roommates, playlistsPUBLISHED: February 18, 2008Â Like most of those who have spent most of their lives in a small town, I quite despised it. It was a typical small town, devoid of anything entertaining or intellectually stimulating to mass the time. Since my younger days, I'd always swore I'd be long gone, back home to Dublin by the time my 18th year was at its conclusion. Mild setbacks caused me to remain in the States longer than I'd anticipated. I was lost as to what I should do: should I break up with my boyfriend and continue with my dream, or should I tough it out in case he was the one? As I lay on my bed in my dorm room, my roommate played a song that connected with me like few songs had. She had an insane knack for knowing when to pick the right song to help me through my constant hurdles. Â I remember sitting up in bed, completely amazed with the song. This was it, this was everything that had crossed my mind in the past year. I knew exactly what it meant to be perpetually stuck behind a state line that felt like the Berlin wall. I'd tried to make the best of a bad relationship that should have never even been a relationship to begin with, let alone continued as long as it ultimately did. He lived in the decrepit, clapboard house in my heart, and he had to be evicted. He'd been a little short on the rent as of late, and it was time to find a new occupant. Â The line that spoke to me the clearest, however, was the line "At night, the sun in the tree made the skyline look like crooked teeth". Many times had I lain awake at night, staring out the window as the sun set behind the tree outside our window, trying to decide what I should do. Â Needless to say, I listened to the song.
