I was into Nirvana as much as the next teenager hwo knew anything about the three-piece group from Seattle. "Smells Like Teen Spirit," was not a catch phrase for a deodorant commercial, but an anthem for all newly dubbed "grunge" people, those who wore flannel shirts and, tee shirts and rocked out to bands from Seattle, such as Nirvana, Mother Love Bone or Soundgarden.

When In Utero came out, I remember watching the video for "Heart-Shaped Box" and wasn't sure if I was mesmerized by the video's Helter Skelter imagery of people on crosses and the three guys(Krist Novaselic, Dave Grohl and Kurt Cobain) all sitting on a bed in some teenybopper's bedroom that looked to be the room of Cupid or a Valentine's Day junkie.

The song though, was one that hit me, especially when  the knowledge that Kurt Cobain had comitted suicide was out. The album was at the top of the charts and then the leader goes and kills himself! What a jerk! I couldn't even listen to Nirvana's music for months and months after his death.

"Heart-Shaped Box" was probably one if his warnings, Other precursors and "hints" that all was not well in the Cobain camp were apparent, such another "In Utero" song "Dumb," or "I Hate Myself and Want to Die, " ironically featured on the comically brilliant "Beavis and Butt-head Do America" Album.

"Meat eating orchids forgive no one just yet."

"I want to eat your cancer when it turns black"

Weird, yet hauntingly beautiful.
