Littering the TopsoilLOCATION: Coliseum , Oakland, CAYEAR: 2005TAGS: Jimmy Eat World, mosh pitsPUBLISHED: February 15, 2008I don't particularly consider J.E.W. to be a moshing band. This concert proved me wrong. My roommate loved this band, so we and two friends drove up to Oakland for this concert. The preceding act, as it turned out, was Taking Back Sunday, which I didn't know as well. Their fans, apparently, are really into the mosh pit/crowd surfing part of concert-going. Not that I have a problem with that... it's a fun energy. But when you're up in the very front of a gigantic sea of people, it can get a little claustrophobic, especially since I was used to smaller, usually tamer venues. During Jimmy's opening song--Bleed American--I was, at several points, lifted off my feet as the crush of people nearly toppled itself over. My roommate and I eventually found safer ground, where we could avoid being kicked in the head by crowd surfers in relative peace. I say relative, but man.... I have never been so sweaty in my life. Never. We were literally dripping sweat, and our jeans were sagging on our legs as if we'd jumped in a lake. Yeah... it was pretty disgusting. After we got back to the car, still on an adrenalin high, we stopped by a 7-11. In the car stripped off our shirts and wore our sweatshirts over our bras, just to dry off, and then went and bought a liter of soda and liter of water each, giggling about how our hearts were nearly littering the topsoil, as the lyrics to this song go. The experience didn't end there for us either--we got back and engaged in general mischief for the rest of the night. (On a side note, if you've ever seen Jimmy in concert, you know how sweaty he gets. He almost always wears the same black silk shirt, and you can tell how far he is into his set by where the sweat lines are on the material. ;P ). That was one of those really memorable concerts--and I smile every time I hear this song.Â
