Cinnamongirl | MEMORY FROM 1977

Rhapsody at Midnight

I can't remember the exact year this memory is from. I was about 5 or 6 years old, so sometime in the late 70's. There was that show, The Midnight Special, that was on tv. I was sleeping (well, I was supposed to be sleeping, anyway), on my grandma's couch and the tv was on. They always left it on for me because I was still afraid of the dark. I remember watching The Midnight Special one night, and Queen was on. I had never heard them before, but I was totally enthralled by their performance. I fell in love with them on the spot, singing about Scaramouche, Galileo and Beelzebub. I had no idea what those words were, but I didn't care. The music just crept into my soul and latched on, and I was never the same again.

I remember the next day, my mom came to pick me up and she had the radio on in the car. Bohemian Rhapsody came on and I squealed with joy, turned it up and started (trying to) sing along. She looked at me like I was crazy, then started singing along as well. Afterwards, she asked where I had heard that song, and I told her. She yelled at me for staying up so late, but later she played her Queen records for me.

Even though I got in trouble, it is a great memory for me. I really miss that tv show and that era. Music was just music, fun and carefree.

RHMF said: Freddie would be proud. I too remember staying up late to watch the "Midnight Special" as a little kid. Just the word "midnight" made it somehow cool and forbidden. Add the word "special" and you just had to find out for yourself. No doubt seeing Freddie and the gang left a profound musical memory for you. Great post. (5/17/2008)
