My Baby Moving

LOCATION: In a car, on my way home from a conference , Houston, Texas

I probably should have known from the moment I got pregnant that my daughter was going to be a music lover. Once she started moving in my belly, I noticed a number of patterns. In particular, when music was playing, her movement became more animated and for some reason Loose Yourself seemed to be her favorite song.

I found out how much she liked this song in what I consider an odd way. I had just been attending a journalism conference in Houston, Texas with some fellow organization members. Because I was riding in someone elses car, I had no control over the radio. Ill be the first to admit that, although I think he is a talented rapper and uses great beats, Im not a true fan of Eminem. My acquaintance played a mixed CD that included the song Lose Yourself.

Up until that point, I had felt my daughter move in a series of flutters on a daily basis. But, when the music played in the car, the flutters became vigorous. I remember when Lose Yourself began to play, her movements became faster and faster. It felt like she was moving to the rhythm of the beat. At that time, I discounted it as fluke.

However, as my pregnancy progressed, I would test her movements when Eminem played, and just as the first time, the beat of his song somehow made her more excited. I thought this would end after her birth, but by the time she was born, Loose Yourself was being used in a commercial ad. Ill never forget her bouncing in her baby chair when that commercial came on the television. Although she is older, she seems to remember this song. That experience made me wonder how much a baby takes in before they are born.
