Chicken RanchLOCATION: my home , CorsicanaYEAR: 1973TAGS: whorehousePUBLISHED: April 28, 2008I was probably 11 or 12 years old and bought this on a 45. I didn't know too much about rock and roll at that time, sure didnt know anything about the subject matter of the song, didnt even know that ZZ was from my home state. Hey, I was a kid....The one thing I did know was that I really liked the sound that this Little ol' band from Texas had put on that little ol' piece of vinyl. I bought it along with a few more on a garage sale trip with my mom. When we got home she wanted to see what I'd gptten and I showed her my little stack of 45s. I didnt understand the funny look on her face at one point. Later that afternoon a couple of her friends came by the house. She came into my room and "borrowed" this one 45. Then she and her friends closed the door to her bedroom to listen.I didnt understand what the deal was at the time. Come to find out later that La Grange, Texas was the home of the original "Chicken Ranch" AKA The best little whorehouse in Texas, which had just been shut down by authorities that year. So I guess thats why she was so interested. Needless to say, she didnt find alot of references in the song to alots of illicit sexual favors, other than hints if you were "in the know", and some of the best southern blues boogie riffs around. Being fans of Elvis and Hank Williams Sr, I'm sure she wasnt too impressed with the song itself, but I guess she just wanted to make sure I wasnt getting ideas about a bunch of whores or something.
