How I met Mike Patton

No, I didn't technically meet Mike Patton but now that I have your attention, here's how I was introduced to his awesomeness and his music.

My big brother was 8 years older than me. His bedroom walls were covered in Iron Maiden, MOD, and other Metal Posters. I thought he was a God. I'm serious, he was the coolest guy ever. And he knew  cool music.

In my mind, that cool music was loud, fast and hard. You couldn't understand the vocals but you would play air guitar and bang your head.

When I was about 11 years old, I was watching Gremlins 2 on cable. All of a sudden, I heard the beginning cords of Surprise! You're Dead during one scene when the Gremlins were up to no good. I was mesmerized. The fast guitars and the growling vocals got my blood pumping.

I had to know who sang this beautiful metal masterpiece. The only words I could understand were "Surprise! You're Dead" so I waiting until the end credits and watched eagerly for the soundtrack section.  Then there it was in all it's glory and there was the artist: Faith No More.

I ran into my mom's room and asked if I could buy an album with my birthday money savings. She said yes and the next day I bought it.

I must have listened to that tape over and over and over again. And even thought they weren't as hard as my brother's music, I was sold. I was now a Faith No More fan.
