Winter CampingLOCATION: tent , MassachusettsYEAR: 1978TAGS: camping, winterPUBLISHED: August 7, 2008To achieve our 'Winter Survival' badge, my girl scout troop spent a night camping in the woods behind my grandparents house. Our scout leaders wisely chose to spend the night in their own beds, leaving 6 or 7 preteen girls packed into a large tent with our sleeping bags, many extra blankets and a radio. As the night progressed, we had finally talked and giggled ourselves out but the radio was still playing. For the first time, it was quiet enough to "hear" the silence of the snow outside our cozy tent. Then this song came on the radio. I'm sure I probably had heard the song before but it felt like the first time. Somehow, it accentuated the slight surrealness of whole event; the contrast of the warmth inside our tent and the cold of the snowdrifts outside, the thrill of no adult supervision and the feeling of separateness that I felt when the song ended and the other girls didn't share my joy in the song. I, meanwhile, had became a Beatles fan on the spot.
