We were leaving the vast parking lot that used to be my playground, but was now being used to fill burlap sacks with sand. I was only 8 years old so I filled a few bags, but didn't really grasp the gravity of the situation. My hometown was being swallowed up by the Mississippi River. After a long summer afternoon of dodging forklifts with pallets, i rode in the back of my mom's new Ford Thunderbird listening to the radio. "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" played. I must have heard it before because my mom and I sang along. Loudly. I asked her who it was and she said "The Clash." The band name seemed weird to me at the time, but I think that was my introduction and bildungsroman into the world of punk. I've never looked back.
