Greatest Rock Guitar SolosAdd Your List To This TopicRank
Song
Commentary
1.
Metallica
These were the days when Kirk Hammet actually sat down and composed a solo, much like a first violinist of a symphony orchestra. Alas! What happened to those solos?
2.
Rage Against The Machine
What can you say about Tom Morello? He's probably the most creative guitarist since Hendrix. He creates sounds nobody even knew a guitar could make - and he uses no effects pedals!
3.
Ozzy Osbourne
Most Ozzy fans would argue that Randy Rhodes is the ultimate Ozzy guitarist, but Zakk Wylde gets promoted with this awesome melodic solo that builds up into a very sharp-shredding headbang.
4.
Spinal Tap
This is not a joke. This song has a kick-ass vibrant solo by Slash, followed by a shred fest by Joe Satriani, with a tradeoff to Jeff Beck -not to mention a great solo by Steve Lukather, and the Tap's very own Nigel Tufnel. 5 solos!! Nice!
5.
The Pixies
Joey Santiago's surfiest and most melodic solo, tied closesly with "Vamos" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven"

1.
The Beatles
Perhaps one of John Lennon's saddest songs, at the same time, it's one of his most beautiful and spiritual ones too.
2.
The Beatles
The Beatles at their darkest, and also most ironic. Definitely a predecessor to grunge.
3.
The Beatles
Better drop some acid. The orchestral interlude in the midsection is a real trip.
4.
The Beatles
This song shows us where Kurt Cobain got most of his ideas. Perhaps the grungiest Beatles song of all.
5.
The Beatles
Sad, Haunting, beautiful. Enough Said. Check out the Johnny Cash version. I really wish this was a top 25 list, because there are so many songs that SHOULD be here...

Danny Elfman was always really good at creating a Halloweenie mood
2.

Creepy bells on the Exorcist...definitely a scary tune.
3.
Various Artists
This awesome song on an AWESOME album starts with the Twilight Zone theme and evolves into a 60's punk-surf classic. Super-Mega kick Ass!!
5.
Type O Negative
This instrumental is filled with chains, grunts and all sorts of scary shit!
Songs that make me cryAdd Your List To This TopicRank
Song
Commentary
1.
Jeff Buckley
It's no "I cum blood", but it's a sad song nonetheless...
2.
Johnny Cash
This is a song about happy memories, good times, and ultimately death...Cash does a really heartfelt rendition of this Beatles classic.
3.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
A song about the electric chair and a broken man on death row who thinks he's innocent.
4.
The Pixies
A gorgeous vista of the plains of Sedona, Arizona...beautiful.
5.
Elliott Smith
More poignant is the fact that this song, about a man who always felt inadequate, came out after Elliott Smith's untimely death.

1.
Soundgarden
The classic Jesus song. Raise your arms aloft in the Jesus Christ pose.
2.
NOFX
A song about the second coming of Jesus. Hilarious...Fat Mike is definitely going to hell for this one.
3.
Morrissey
I'm sure Jesus is relieved that Morrissey has forgiven him. Thanks Morrissey!
4.
Supergrass
Who knew Jesus was an interstellar traveller? Supergrass seems to know something about it.
5.
Skid Row
What the hell is a Quicksand Jesus, and why is he so "far away"? Great album, awesome singer... HONORABLE MENTION goes to The Clash with BRAND NEW CADILLAC - "Jesus Christ - where did you get that Cadillac?" Best...lyric...ever...

What the fuck does this even mean? Is this woman the most self-promoting person in showbiz history? She should get together with Donald Trump.

1.
The Pixies
If you take the first letter from each line of this song, it spells the word "SURFER"...The perfect chillin' on the beach song.
2.
Reverend Horton Heat
In this great Surf song, the band confesses that they really can't surf.
3.
Compay Segundo
Another great chillin' out song; you can actually hear the tropics in the background of this one.
5.
Cosmonauti
Who said Italians don't surf? Check out this great Italian surf band....for more great Surf tunes check out this list: http://www.jamsbio.com/lists/browse/best-surf-tune

Alice In Chains
If I would, could you? Fantastic ending to a great record.
2.
Faith No More
Why not end an experimental metal album with a gospel tune? Awesome.
3.
NOFX
One of NOFX's best albums- this ending is melancholy, poignant and purely NOFX.
4.
The Pixies
One of my favorite songs of all time. This song pulls on the heartstrings...
5.
Mr. Bungle
Mr. Bungle was probably the most creative, far-out band out there. This song is like 20 songs in one, and all of them are great.

The Beatles
If they thought nobody would figure out the title of the song - with their psychedelic rhythms and raving melodies - they must have been tripping.
2.
System Of A Down
The aural version of coke is right here in this song.
3.
Alice In Chains
Poignant that Layne Staley wrote 90% of his songs about Smack...Amen to the God Smack.
4.
Peter Tosh
Hilarious classic song. Legalize it because: Doctors & lawyers smoke it, birds eat it and it cures tuberculosis...who knew?
5.
Nearly God
"And drown your past regrets in Coffee and Cigarettes..." beautiful song by Tricky, er, I mean Nearly God. I was tempted to put Lagwagon's Mr. Coffee on here ("Here I come to save the day - On legal speed, the American way") but opted for the more classic Tricky track.

Elliott Smith
Sad, moving, melodic and beautiful. Typical Elliott Smith.
2.
Alice In Chains
From their acoustic album "Sap", AIC played this one live for MTV's Unplugged.
3.
Jeff Buckley
Buckley with nothing but his hands to clap the beat. Very cool tune.
4.
Nirvana (USA)
Kurt Cobain's suicide note song. A great acoustic rendition.
5.
Bob Marley
Bob Marley's most heartfelt song - forgiving the world of its sins.
5 Songs to Make You Fall in Love with SupergrassAdd Your List To This TopicRank

2.
Supergrass
In It For the Money and Richard III come in at close 2nds.
4.
Supergrass
A very eclectic album, this song stands out the most. "Never Done Nothing Like That Before" is a lot of fun however...
5.
Supergrass
Did Supergrass start going downhill on this album? Not sure, there are some nice mellow tunes on it, but the rockers just don't have the balls....
Best Surf TuneAdd Your List To This TopicRank
Song
Commentary
1.
Reverend Horton Heat
The first time I heard this song, my hat flew up into the ceiling and my eyes popped out. Very cool shredding psychobilly surf
2.
Dick Dale
This song was made famous by Pulp Fiction, and it remains one of surf's coolest instrumentals.
3.
The Pixies
The Pixies couldn't hide their Surf roots, and with this tune, they showcased their melodic mastery of the genre.
4.
Ennio Morricone
You may argue that this isn't a Surf tune, but listen to the guitar, and the chord progression. Morricone was definitely a fan of surf rock. Why do you think Tarantino used so much surf sock? It's basically spaghetti western music with a backbeat.
5.
The Aqua Velvets
This song (and the whole album) is filled with tunes so smooth, they're like the aural equvalent of a Martini.

Colin Zeal looks at his watch - He's on time yet again. He's so pleased in himself. The ultimate ode to the 9-5 working stiff.
2.
The Jam
He is the head boy at the school/he is the captain of the team. All the girls in the neighborhood try to go out with Davy Watts. I wish I could be like David Watts.
3.
The Beatles
Eleanor Rigby was buried along with her name. Nobody came to her funeral. A real ode to the lonely.
4.
Blur
How could I not put Ernold Same on this list. Ernold makes Colin Zeal look like a superstar. Ernold Same caught the same train, at the same station, sat in the same seat with the same nasty stain, next to same old What's-his-name. Oh, the monotony of working class life!
5.
The Clash
The cops are looking for Jimmy Jazz, the mob is looking for Jimmy Jazz everybody's looking for him! It's not his day...Honorable mention goes to Indie band The Oct8pus, for their songs Scott Price and Earl Groper. Sadly, they are not on Jamsbio...

1.
Blur
Blur's first "Brit Pop" album after their "New Wave" debut...witty, catchy, awesome.
2.
Supergrass
Filled with catchiness, snottyness and Supergrassyness
3.
Super Furry Animals
Does Welsh Pop count as Brit Pop? It better, 'cause SFA kick ass!
4.
Manic Street Preachers
This band went from glam rock, to hard rock, to indie rock, reported their guitarist, Ritchie Manic, missing (he's been missing for over 10 years now), and finally settled into a melancholy, yet political, not-quite-britpop, but definitely Brit and mostly pop...
5.
Shed Seven
Going For Gold (Greatest Hits)
This is one of those bands that just dissappeared. (I believe the singer runs a fish and chips shop - or was that the Menswear singer?)...
Best Spinoff/Solo ProjectsAdd Your List To This TopicRank
Album
Commentary
1.
Frank Black
This album has about 20 3-minute songs on it, and they're all perfect, and all unique. The best solo album by Frank Black, with special appearances from the Pixies' Joey Santiago and David Lovering.
2.
George Harrison
The ultimate Solo Album. If you're a fan of the Beatles, this is the "other" Beatles album you must have. Filled with classics, like "My Sweet Lord" and "I live for you" - it's songwriting perfection
3.
Porno For Pyros
Not quite a solo project, not quite a spin off, this short-lived, underrated band had 2 members from Janes' Addiction in it. Good God's Urge is the pinnacle of this band's creativity
4.
Stephen Malkmus
What did Malkmus do after Pavement? He formed a band named "The Jicks" and put out a handful of great quirky indie tunes. Highly recommended listening: "Real Emotional Trash"
5.
Terry Hall
A great outing by the Specials' Terry Hall, in collaboration with Iraqi singer Mushtaq. This album is filled with arab influenced melodies, poignant political commentary, Israeli rapping and a cameo from Gorillaz/Blur's Damon Albarn. Seriously - check it out.
Top 5 Sophomore AlbumsAdd Your List To This TopicRank
Album
Commentary
1.
Frank Black
With TOTY, Frank Black surpassed himself leaving his dismal debut album in the dust.
2.
Alice In Chains
After their successful debut album, AIC released a mini EP entitled "Sap" which showed the quieter side of the band. Although well received, the fans craved the heavy sounds of the debut album. Dirt was not only technically superior, it showed the band's range of creativity, Layne Staley's vocal prowess and it churned out many hit songs.
3.
The Sea & Cake
After establishing a highly original sound, the Sea & Cake took that sound and morphed it into something all their own. Highly recommended listen: "Parasol" - it will make you cry.
4.
Blur
After a promising debut, Blur took it to the next level. MLIR is poppier, snottier, and more sardonic, and it spawned the sound that we refer to as Britpop today.
5.
Metallica
Who thought Metallica could get heavier, catchier, more sentimental and smarter after their debut "Kill 'Em All"? This album established them as the metal gods they were for the entire 80's.
Rock Musicians Who Died Too YoungAdd Your List To This TopicRank

1.
Jeff Buckley once said "Nusrat is my Elvis". Nursat not only influenced Buckley (Eddie Vedder and Peter Gabriel too) , but he brought Qwaali to the rest of the world.
2.
Layne Staley lived a tragic life and died a tragic death. Perhaps one of the saddest deaths in modern rock n' roll, since...not too many people were surprised.
4.
Bob Marley died at the age of 36. The worst part is that his mission of love and peace was interrupted.
5.
Cliff Burton died young - 24. Although his death barely made a splash in the world of popular rock, it was nonetheless a huge tragedy for the band that would become the world's biggest metal band.
Artists Who Influenced My MusicAdd Your List To This TopicRank

1.
Probably the biggest influence to the Oct8pus. The Pixies inspire melody driven surf guitars over simple bass lines, hard beats and screamed vocals.
2.
Who didn't this band influence? I guess the bands that came before them...
3.
Massive Attack and Tricky planted the trip hop seed in the Oct8pus's head...the rest is history.
4.
The Sea & Cake manages to stay groovy, mellow and jammin' all at the same time. A fab five of great musicians. This band should be huge, but they managed to stay undetected from the mainstream spotlights.
5.
If you know the Oct8pus, you'll get the Cash connection. A true genius.

Oh Wait...maybe this one is the worst one...
4.
Their debut album was a Nirvana ripoff that came out about 7 years after Kurt Cobain's death. But hey! They're from Australia, so let's sign them!
5.
Speaking of Australia, (I'm gonna get yelled at for this) but AC/CD is a pretty boring band. They basically have one song that they keep re-writing. I love the song Back in Black, but every other song sounds just like it, so AC/DC is on this list because after about 6 minutes they get BORING. Top 5 Greatest DrummersAdd Your List To This TopicRank

1.
My drum teacher taught me that there are other great styles out there besides metal. Buddy Rich's Drum Rudiments was the first book I learned to play drums on. Rich was a pioneer of the 5 piece drumkit. He was so amazing that he died on the drum throne.
2.
Sean Reinert is such a fenomenal drummer that very few can do what he does. His guest spot on Death's "Human" is out of this world.
3.
Speaking of the band Death, listen to The Sound of Perseverance. Richard Christy's work here will blow you away. Yes - this is the same Richard Christy who does prank calls and gay bits on the Howard Stern show...
4.
Danny Carey will keep you guessing when he'll hit that snare next. That man is a machine.
5.
Matt Cameron's style is always recognizable but never predictable. Nice!
Worst Band or Singer Ever!!!!!!!!!Add Your List To This TopicRank
Artist
Commentary
1.
First of all, Creed used to be a Christian band. When they realized what a huge following they had among the Christian rockers, they went mainstream. Somehow, everyone fell for their cliche' renditions of craprock songs. At best, this band is an Alive-era Pearl Jam ripoff band; at worst, it's plain boring, crass and melodramatic.
2.
If Creed is so low in my book, then what about a Creed ripoff band? Seriously, and to think that Stain went on tour with Creed! Jesus, what kind of unimaginative people went to those shows?
3.
Can you see where this is going? To make matters worse, Daughtry is an American Idol relic, which adds a whole new dimention of cheesiness to the equation.
4.
By now, you see a recurring theme...there are many bands that play "cock rock" or rather, slow tempo music, with distorted open chord guitars, while the singer whines in his most manly voice about how sensitive and lost he is.
5.
This band proves that even the biggest douchebags get signed. Fred Durst, with his terrible singing, corny lyrics and laughable attitude took rap metal and turned it into crap. The irony is that every song by Limp Bizkit is about how cool Limp Bizkit is.
