SchizophreniaLOCATION: Home , Fort WorthYEAR: 2007TAGS: MasksPUBLISHED: July 8, 2008This was the first Billy Joel album I bought. Like always, I let the CD run from top to bottom, second in line was "The Stranger", the title track, if you will. Honestly, at first it sounded boring. With all the whistling and eerie piano background, it was beautiful, of course, but not all that interesting. Then all of a sudden it took a complete turn-around. A cymbal crash, a guitar riff, and piano harmonics made this song do a u-turn from my perceptions of the first, what, minute, of the song. It was trippy...Tricky, and unexpected. Even without the lyrics, the song is just a sort of fantasy, typed song. Something real out there, psychadelic, even. Add the lyrics, and it becomes very schizophrenia-esque. About someone who hides behind masks, others don't really know that person, for the mask only comes off "after everyone has gone". But just because you have those masks, doesn't always mean that's not really apart of who you are though. Bottom-line, this song was just very eerie, and sort of two different sides. I love it. It reminded me so much of the disease which I plan to research in college, schizophrenia. Started one way, became another thing, then went into the thing it was before...Constantly flip-flopping styles and feelings. Very interesting. I LOVE the song, it's so different from everything else out there. But then again, all of Billy Joel's songs are incredibly diverse and original.
