Austin | MEMORY FROM 2004

Let's Mosh

LOCATION: House of Blues, Orlando Florida

YEAR: 2004

TAGS: Family

PUBLISHED: February 12, 2008

In 2003 my friend Carson introduced me to a band called The Mad Caddies. They have nothing to do with this memory. Listening to bands like The Mad Caddies eventually lead me to a band called the Dropkick Murphy's. The Dropkick's sound is a blend of punk rock and Irish folk music that i really fell in love with.

In 2004 my brother was starting his first year in college at the University of Central Florida and I was starting my junior year in high school. At the time my brother was still dating a girl from our hometown and we(his girlfriend and I) would visit him in Orlando. A lot of the time we didn't have a particular reason for going but for one trip there was. I hadn't listened to the Dropkick Murphy's that much but they were playing a show at the House of Blues in Orlando and my brother and I decided we would go.

As we walked up to the venue all I could hear was shrill screaming coming from inside. I couldn't help but think to myself "My god, I hope that isn't what the whole show is going to sound like." To my relief, it was the opening band, The Casualties. The Casualties set ended and the crowd became restless and started chanting for the Dropkicks to play. When the curtain lifted there was only a single man playing the song Cadence to Arms on the bagpipes. For the moment it was surreal, but only for the moment. The bagpipes faded out and the rest of the band burst onto the stage in a furious rage of heavy hitting instuments and vocals. I remember this concert specifically as the first mosh pit I'd been in and boy was it a good one. Have you ever been in a mosh pit? If not, there is only one rule you need to know...There are no rules. I was pushed, shoved, punched, kicked and it was awesome. The energy in the place was incredible and everybody just seemed to forget their troubles for a while. After the show my brother and I stepped out into the crisp night air drenched in sweat, covered in bumps and bruises and I couldn't have asked for a better time. Now whenever we listen to the Dropkick Murphys all i have to say is " Let's Mosh!" and in less than 10 minutes our living room is a wasteland.
