That teacher's in a band?LOCATION: School hall , Waldbroel, GermanyYEAR: 1990TAGS: German trip, teachersPUBLISHED: February 18, 2008At 14, I spent a month in Germany with a group from school, staying with host families and attending some German schools. One evening I'll never forget was the last night in the small town of Waldbroel, in the central west of Germany. Actually, that's not quite true, because I can't remember very much of the evening. I know we were all a bit sad that we'd soon have to say goodbye to our new friends, and we were also quite exhausted after a busy program of activities. There was a small party held for us at the school that night, with snacks and music and lots of chatting. Later in the evening comes the bit I remember very clearly. The English teacher from the German school, a man who seemed old to me, but was probably only in his 30s, had accompanied us around all week. He had an odd German accent when he spoke English, but at least he spoke more English than his students. Until this point he seemed like any other teacher I'd known. But then he got up on a small stage with his band. He was the lead singer, and if I remember correctly, also played the guitar. I couldn't believe a teacher was on stage in front of us, singing loudly and jumping around. The best song they performed all night was their cover of "Jumpin' Jack Flash". I wonder if that guy still plays the guitar, or even remembers all the words to "Jumpin' Jack Flash". I sure remember his performance that night.
