Taking a shower in the caravan parkLOCATION: Camping park , QueenslandYEAR: 1988TAGS: summer vacation, camping park, showersPUBLISHED: February 16, 2008In early high school I was a huge Melissa Etheridge fan. She visited Perth twice and I went to her concert both times, singing along loudly to those heart-wrenching love songs. I loved her early stuff the best, raw rock'n'roll, with lots of anguish. Perfect for a teenager. In the summer after the eighth grade, my parents bought a campervan and decided to spend the summer driving around Australia with me and my sister. We saw Melbourne and Sydney, visited our capital, Canberra, and adored the sunshine of Queensland. And one particular memory I still have strongly came from a caravan park somewhere along the northern Queensland coast - perhaps in Cairns, or somewhere nearby. It was early evening, but still very light, and after a swim in the pool I went to the large caravan park shower block to clean up. Perhaps most people were eating dinner, because the shower block was empty. It had a large, well-lit area with sinks and mirrors, and shower cubicles around the corner. Compared to many we'd seen on the trip so far, it was bright and clean. And it had one special bonus: it had piped in music. As I took my shower, the radio station they were piping in started playing one of my favorite songs: Melissa Etheridge's "Bring Me Some Water". It wasn't quite loud enough, so I turned off the shower to be able to hear it better. And listening to that song today always takes me back to this caravan park, somewhere on the opposite side of Australia.
