My last night in BratislavaLOCATION: My friend's apartment , Bratislava, SlovakiaYEAR: 2004TAGS: friends, Bratislava, saying goodbyePUBLISHED: February 17, 2008I lived and worked in Bratislava for just one year, but I made a friendship there that will last a lifetime. Zitka lived across the road from me and we shared a passion for chocolate and fried cheese, a love of chatting and swimming, and a similar philosophy on life. The week before I left Bratislava, we spent every evening hanging out together - walking through the city, buying ice cream, eating cherries in the gardens of Bratislava Castle. On my very last night, I simply went over to her place and we sat in her bedroom talking and listening to music. She'd recently borrowed a Nelly Furtado CD from a colleague of hers, and we played it on a loop all night, not really noticing when it started to repeat because we were so busy talking, trying to fit another few years' of friendship into our last minutes. Zitka thought we would never see each other again, although I was more confident that we would, and have been proved right - but that's never the same as living in the same street. My favorite song off that Nelly Furtado CD was "I'm Like A Bird", and hearing it always reminds me of Zitka. I still miss her, but we keep in touch pretty often and I hope we always will.
