Hot in the city of BerlinLOCATION: On the train , Berlin, GermanyYEAR: 1990TAGS: German trip, train songsPUBLISHED: February 16, 2008At 14, I was really lucky to be able to go on a school trip to Germany for four weeks with other students from my German language class. We stayed with host families in three different corners of Germany, and had some really scenic train trips in between the three families. I love trains anyway, and to be able to spend a few hours on one, rattling through the German countryside with a bunch of friends, thousands of miles from home, was a lot of fun. The funny thing is, though, that despite being with twenty other teenage girls, none of us talked to each other much. We were all at the age where we disappeared into our own world with our headphones on and our music turned up loud. I'll always remember Billy Idol's song "Hot in the City" as the soundtrack for my friends and I on that train. I'd never really listened to Billy Idol's music before, but a friend from the grade above me got me hooked. I still remember sharing a train compartment with her, and she was so excited when her Walkman reached "Hot in the City". She pulled my headphones off me and handed me hers instead: "You have to listen to this song," she said, "It's the best song ever". Big words, and while I'm not claiming that "Hot in the City" is the best song ever, it is a great song, with plenty of energy and a great beat. And I'll always associate it with Berlin, an incredible city that our train pulled into not long after I first listened to this song.
