Falling asleep to the Sound of MusicLOCATION: My bedroom , Perth, AustraliaYEAR: 1982TAGS: childhood, falling asleep, musicalsPUBLISHED: February 29, 2008My mother wasn't a big fan of any particular music; there weren't a lot of records in our house when I was a child. What she did have, however, was a small collection of records from Broadway musicals that had been turned into films, and my very favorite of these was "The Sound of Music". The film of "The Sound of Music" actually scared me a little as a child, but now I watch it with sentimental glee. But the music is something I've always loved. My mother had the idea when my sister and I were kids that we would fall asleep more easily if we were listening to music. I don't know why she thought so, given that we were rarely exposed to other music, but I always found it pleasant - unless it was a night when I had trouble getting to sleep and the cassette reached the end - then it made a terrible "clunk" noise that made me wide awake again. In any case, I think my mother would confirm that the most requested cassette was the copy of "The Sound of Music". I loved each and every song, but for some reason Do-Re-Mi stuck in my head longer. I don't rememer why anymore - perhaps it was near the beginning of the tape, so I always heard it before I fell asleep - perhaps I enjoyed that scene in the movie more than any others. Fortunately, hearing it doesn't make me feel sleepy anymore, just happy, and safe.
