Driving along the coastLOCATION: The coastal highway, Perth, AustraliaYEAR: 1993TAGS: summer vacation, singing in the carPUBLISHED: February 10, 2008It was the first summer that I had a driving license and my own car. The weather was hot, constantly over the century, and the coolest place to be was in my car with its lifesaving air conditioner, or driving along the coast with the windows down catching the afternoon sea breeze. With a love for driving that I’ve definitely lost since then, I would take detours on my way home to drive along West Coast Highway, looking at the ocean, admiring the waves, and singing, loudly. I was singing along to cassettes, at the time, and sometimes to the radio. Far and away my favorite song for this kind of hot, sunny driving day was Don Henley’s Boys of Summer. I’ve always loved songs that tell a bit of a story, and singing along at the top of voice to Boys of Summer seemed the perfect fit for that summer. What I really wanted was a car whose top I could pull down and a pair of Wayfarer sunglasses so I could re-enact the song properly, but I was still a student at the time so my budget didn’t stretch beyond the gas needed to keep my little car going. These days if I hear Boys of Summer on the radio, you’d better beware if you’re in the same room or in the car with me. Of all the songs I know, that’s the one I just can’t help singing along to, loud and strong and with plenty of passion. And no matter where I am, it instantly reminds me of the beach.
