Billie Jean's not my motherLOCATION: Our living room , Perth, AustraliaYEAR: 1983TAGS: wrong lyrics, childhoodPUBLISHED: February 29, 2008I remember this like it was yesterday: my father came home from a quiz night and he'd won a copy of Michael Jackson's new album, "Thriller". I was seven years old and there was no modern pop or rock music in our house, so I was over the moon to discover that my sister and I now jointly owned a "Thriller" record - of course, my father told us we had to share it. I knew who Michael Jackson was, but my sister was probably too young to understand. And my parents weren't interested. The record player was in a shelf in the corner of a living room area that we hardly ever used - it was away from the main parts of the house where we tended to gather, far from the kitchen or the TV. So I found myself carefully putting the needle on to the "Thriller" record all alone, regularly for months at a time, and lying on the soft carpet listening to Michael Jackson. I loved the title song, but my favorite track was actually "Billie Jean". The only thing is that for years, I thought he was singing "Billie Jean is not my mother". I guess to a seven year old girl who doesn't really have any idea what a "lover" is, a "mother" is a much more plausible topic to sing about. So I sang along loudly, "Billie Jean is not my mother", and even today, although I know better, this version sometimes slips out.
