A multicultural night outLOCATION: Clancy's Fish Pub , Fremantle, AustraliaYEAR: 2007TAGS: friends, pub musicPUBLISHED: February 16, 2008I've always loved The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' song The Impression That I Get, both because the rhythm is so fun and infectious, and because I love the lyrics, too ... "I'm not a coward, I've just never been tested - I'd like to think that if I was I would pass ..." and all kinds of other fun and fast sentences which I used to sing along to in my car (after a bit of practice to get them right!). But it was always a song I'd only heard on the radio, never owned, and in the last few years it hadn't crossed any airwaves near me. Until recently. One of my colleagues plays in a local ska band named "Special Brew" and he often leaves simple photocopies advertising his coming gigs on our desks. I'd planned a night out with a few friends: my German husband, a Belgian exchange student we knew, and a friend of ours who's just migrated from Kazakhstan. The makings of a very multicultural evening out. We all headed down to Fremantle, the port city of Perth, and found the pub where my colleague's band was playing. And what a great night we had. Apart from being able to chat about all kinds of interesting topics (ever tried comparing Kazakhstan with Belgium?), we all really enjoyed the music too, and I was most excited when they suddenly began the familiar tune of "The Impression That I Get". I sang along loud and clear and the song stayed stuck in my head for days afterwards.
