Take one fairly nave farm girl and put her on a college campus for about two months--the result in my case was some quick lessons in men that left me ready to give up on them all. Thats when a much wiser senior who had befriended me and my fellow freshman roommates introduced me to Mike. He was warm, witty, and wiryI liked him immediately and the feeling seemed to be mutual. We didnt really date for the first month as we just hung out together and learned more about each other. The more we learned though, the more obvious it became that our feelings were progressing beyond just liking each other. It was at this point in our relationship that our hanging out became dates and we heard this song. From the first time we heard it, it became our song.
Almost immediately thereafter we began making plans to wed as soon as possible. Five months after being introduced we tied the knot, under protest from both families. We were determined to make our marriage work though and prove them wrong. We were young and in lovewe thought that was enough. For the first year it seemed that it was, despite some setbacks and interference from others. To celebrate our first anniversary, Mike made reservations at a fancy supper club in Windsor, Ontario, which was just across the river from our current home in the suburbs of Detroit.
The place was divine and our meal was wonderful. The atmosphere was definitely geared towards couples, and the jewel of the evening was the entertainmentRonnie Dove. He sang several songs then announced that he had a special dedication to the young couple celebrating their first anniversary. He came to our table and sang When Liking Turns to Loving just for us.
The memory survives with all the hope and love of that evening, unfortunately the marriage did not. We were as our parents said--too young and immature. I havent heard it in quite sometime, but when I do it always takes me back to the night Ronnie Dove sang our song for us.
