My Age Has Come

My world had changed dramatically by the time The Fifth Dimension began singing about The Age of Aquarius.  Beyond the well documented changes of that era—the Vietnam War, the hippie movement with its “tune in, turn on, drop out” philosophy, and American cities being ravaged by riots—were the upheavals in my own little corner of the world.
Raised in an era when a woman’s greatest goals were suppose to be marry well, raise an upstanding family and make a comfortable home for all with the idea of a career beyond being a teacher or a nurse were only a vague concept the new philosophies of free love and women’s rights were confusing and guilt ridden for many.
I’d already done things I’d never dreamed of doing like becoming a divorcee, coming close to being an alcoholic, and dating a married man (his divorce was in progress but it wasn’t final yet).  Suddenly I had no idea where I was heading in life—part of the old me was sure it was straight to hell—or who I really was.
Born in late January my astrological sign is Aquarius, so when I heard this song hope was reborn within me.  This was to be a time when I would find the peace and understanding within myself and the world would make sense again.  I might even make sense to the world as well.  It wasn’t that simple unfortunately.  It has taken awhile but I have achieved peace and understanding within most of the time.   The world still doesn’t make sense to me much of the time nor does it seem to have a clue as to what is really happening all around us, but the Aquarian Age is still quite young so there is still hope for  us all.  Every time I hear this song or even think about it I become more certain that we really are in the Age of Aquarius and all will be revealed in time as knowledge is poured out about things not yet even imagined.
