This is not a specific memory, but about an artist that I enjoy. His name is George Strait, but DJs and such have dubbed him King George. Why? Wikipedia gives one answer with his records:
In Strait's more than twenty-five years of recording, all of which have been spent with MCA Records, he has garnered 56 No. 1 songs on all country charts (including Mediabase 24/7, the old Radio & Records charts, and the now-defunct Gavin Report charts),and has more no. 1s than anyone in any genre. His 43 Billboard magazine country No. 1's have set a record, three more than previous record-holder Conway Twitty.[6]
Strait has sold more than 73 million recordings and his certifications from the RIAA include 13 multi-platinum, 32 platinum and 35 gold albums. His overall certification numbers are third of all musicians, behind Elvis Presley and The Beatles.[6][1]
Strait has won 16 CMA Awards, including consecutive entertainer of the year honors in 1989 and 1990, and holds the career record for CMA nominations with seventy-three. Strait was elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006. Strait performed his No. 1 hit "Give it Away" right before accepting his replica Hall of Fame plaque at the 40th CMA Awards. He was only the second artist (after Eddy Arnold in 1966) to be inducted into the Hall of Fame while still actively recording and producing chart-topping hits.
But for me it all comes down to the fact that he has a great voice, a talent for knowing what songs to record, and a personality that doesnt seem to have been affected by all this fame and fortune. He is a family man and proud of it. His style is simple yet effective, his shows are always sell outs and he gives the audiences their moneys worth. Much like others before him such as Johnny Cash, he is always looking to mentor new talent and give them the exposure so vital to making it the music world.
The song I selected always puts a smile on my faceits upbeat with a catchy melody that lingers with you long after the song is done. I love to dance as well so the title strikes a resonant chord with me. The video is of my all-time favorite song that he does. The haunting music is fabulous and the line They took my saddle in Houston. Broke my leg in Santa Fe. I lost my wife and a girlfriend somewhere along the way, always makes me chuckle. Theres no doubt the singer is devoted to the rodeo, because he knows exactly where he lost his saddle, but can only recall that he lost the woman in his life somewhere all the way.
I dont know if he is King George worthy or not, but I do know as long as he sings I'll listen.
