In the spring of 1963 my steady boyfriend’s parents announced that they were moving from our small village in Michigan to a resort area outside of Lima, Ohio.  His dad left before school was out and the family followed at the end of the school year.
Even though it was only a four hour drive it seemed like a lifetime away to Jim and me.  I had a summer babysitting job and he was working the fish hatchery his parents bought, so our days were busy, but that didn’t make either of us less lonely.  Phone calls, unlike today, were few and far between because of the cost among other reasons.
But as the lyrics proclaim we “...send you all my love every day in a letter sealed with a kiss.” and we kept the post office busy.  No, computers for email either.  At the time we thought the summer would never end and we were sure we wouldn’t survive the separation, but it ended and we did.  Jim came back to stay with friends for his senior year so we did “meet again in September.”
Tragically he died in an automobile accident two weeks after his graduation in the summer of 1964, but this song always reminds me of him, and our summer of long distance love.
