It was around midnight when Shawn called. We wanted to have a creative meeting of minds over pancakes. He suggested ihop - I wanted Wafflehouse in Irving (you can smoke there). But Shawn wasn't a smoker yet, so I respected his choice. After discussing music and life and all those fancy things, we parted ways around 4:30.. and being in an unfamiliar part of town, I went the wrong way on I-75, putting me in the center of the Hi5 "mixmaster".. which was undergoing an immense amount of construction at the time. I put on the Kings and smoked like a chimney and navigated my way around the orange cones and one-way streets beautifully, elegantly, as Erlend and Erik guided me into the sunrise. This will always be my favorite song, and it will always remind me of those lonely Texas highways in the middle of the night.
