Return of the Ex

In 2007, I was working at the local cable company as an overworked, underpaid, frequently-blamed phone monkey. I honestly couldn't complain too much, though, considering I got free cable and internet.

One day, I made the rather unpleasant discovery that my ex-boyfriend from several years ago had also gotten a job at the cable company. It wasn't that we parted on bad terms, but he was part of a period of my life that I think everybody is better off forgetting, and in retrospect, I have no idea why I even bothered with him. He recognized me and came over to say hello just before my lunch break. I was polite, because there was no reason not to be.

And then he made a reference to our previous sex life. It was something that only I would understand, but even so, it was glaringly inappropriate, and I spent the rest of my lunch break seething.

Infinity On High may have already been released at the time, I'm not sure, but I know I didn't hear "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs" (or as I used to call it, "I'd Like To Buy A Vowel, Mr. Wentz") until later in the year. The ex was still my coworker, and I'd still see him around, and even though I was single, I would smirk to myself occasionally and hum this song, because the freedom to know myself and the maturity I had gained in the years since we broke up tasted like him, only sweeter.
