My First Day With Fire and the High Priestess

LOCATION: Tall Pines Park , Neptune Beach

YEAR: 2007

TAGS: fire, rain, flash, ritual

PUBLISHED: February 22, 2008

The day after Christmas, there was a battle of slightly-epic proportions in my house, and I ended up on the streets.
After a couple of days, I was discovered by one of my friends, who proceeded to rip me a new one for not contacting them immediately.  I stayed in their house for the remainder of Winter Break, and I spent a majority of my free time with my friend David Appleman.  We spent the first day dancing around the park, riding bikes to random places, and terrorizing mutual friends.

A few days into our boredom.  It was a rainy evening, downright pouring at some points, and David and I had decided to perform a ritual, marking our rite of passage into manhood.  This ritual involved Fire, Rain, ashes, and a High Priestess.

Which is where our mutual friend Ellen came in.

The fire burned high.  We danced, we jumped through flames, and the High Priestess watched on. The rain pounded down on us, and we used "sacred liquid" to keep the flames burning.  We sang "Flash's Theme," by Queen at the top of our lungs.

As the fires died, we picked up the hot embers and rubbed them on David's face and my chest.  The ashes of war were painted on our bodies, and David and I were dubbed "Fire" and "Rain," respectively.

It was a random day, but it sticks out in my mind because it was the first time I had ever done something incredibly crazy for no reason whatsoever. And it was the first time I could have fun without consequence.
