Learning A DanceLOCATION: Morocco's Shrine Temple , Jacksonville, FLYEAR: 2008TAGS: prom, dancing, dancesPUBLISHED: April 13, 2008I am not a student of dance. I tend to avoid it when I can, the only exception being the wonderful DDR. As a matter of fact, the only reason I was made aware of the Macarena and Cha Cha Slide (and for that matter, anything before 1995) is because of my Filipino mother and her friends. Them, along with their borderline obsession with karaoke and line-dancing. I don't know what it is about the Filipino, but they just love themselves some karaoke. Or maybe it's just people over the age of thirty. At any rate, I don't know a lot of dances. Concepts such as this just elude me somehow. When I go to a dance, I don't dance. My friends say I do, but I think I move around goofily in time to music, making myself look like a complete moron. Perhaps that is what dancing is. During prom this year, near the end, when line dancing was just inevitable, this song came on. It was tantalizing. It was terrific. It was another T-word that I'm not even aware of yet. But I did not know it. So I proceeded to observe others with the utmost intent on learning it. I got some angry glares during these moments. Perhaps some guys thought I was checking their girl out. Eventually, I did learn it. But right when I was ready to bust out some crazy moves, the song ended. Not to be defeated, I continued doing the Electric Slide during the next song, which earned me some more odd looks, considering it was "Yeah," by Usher. Though I highly doubt any clubs I'll be going to will feature line dancing, I'll be damned prepared when this song comes up next.
