About this Artist
The Caravans (Gospel)/Shirley CaesarOne of the most popular gospel groups of the 1950s and '60s, the Caravans were a virtual farm team for future solo gospel stars. Members who embarked on equally successful solo careers include the Rev. James Cleveland, Shirley Caesar, Inez Andrews, Albertina Walker, and Dorothy Norwood. The group was founded in 1952 by Walker, and soldiered on through numerous changes in personnel and record labels, but Caesar's departure in 1966 effectively ended the tenure of this long-lasting, highly influential ensemble.
