About this Artist

Shelly Manne

Shelly Manne, a jazz drummer, was one of the leaders of the "West Coast" style that came to light in the '50s. His frequent collaborations with West Coast giants like Russ Freeman, Bud Shank, and Hampton Hawes, as well as his own groups, were some of the most highly regarded sessions of the cool jazz era. He was also the owner of the most celebrated jazz nightspot in Hollywood, Shelly's Manne-Hole. Shortly before his death in 1984, the city of Los Angeles declared September 9th "Shelly Manne Day."
