About this Artist

Petula Clark

Petula Clark has had a remarkably eclectic and enduring career, maintaining a steady level of popularity and professional respect at every step. Known in the U.S. chiefly for her swinging London-era pop hit, "Downtown," British songbird Clark had been a national treasure since her WWII childhood, when she was known as "the British Shirley Temple." Film and TV appearances followed, and in the '50s, Clark began her adult recording career in earnest. In 1964, "Downtown" made her a major international star and earned her a Grammy in the U.S. She continued to record and act for the next 20 years, and in the 1980s she began a successful run as a musical-theater star.
